The second upgrade iteration to the M16 rifle, designed to simplify logistics and increase usability. Note the improved handguards and burst-fire trigger group.

In-game description

The M16A2 is an American assault rifle featured in Blackhawk Rescue Mission 5. It fires the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and is provided to the player for free.

Real-world history[]

Developed at the request of the United States Marine Corps following shortcomings during the Vietnam War with the M16A1. Driven by technological advancements and combat experience, the A2 is arguably one of the most successful iterations of the M16 platform.

Updates to the weapon's barrel increased thickness and weight, but increased stiffness and heat capacitance. The iconic A2 muzzle device features ports on the top to fight muzzle climb and prevent debris from being kicked up when firing from the prone position. A burst cam was added in response to research conducted by the United States Army that concluded burst-fire maintains accuracy and firepower while also conserving ammunition.

The upper receiver was modified with a case deflector to assist left-handed shooters. On the lower receiver, reinforcement was added around the takedown pin holes and receiver extension area. New handguards were designed with logistics and backward compatibility in mind. The fixed buttstock was lengthened and produced from a stronger polymer that significantly improved durability. The pistol grip's texture was enhanced, and a nub was added for the middle finger to rest.

Overview[]

As the starter weapon, the M16A2 is common to see in the hands of new players. It sports low recoil and average damage for its class, allowing it to compete in earlier phases of the game. Its burst-fire trigger group may be limiting in a pinch but ensures that the user makes the most out of their generous reserve ammunition.

While there isn't anything wrong per se with the M16A2, it does suffer from a lack of customization. The weapon allows the attachment of rail accessories and muzzle devices but is restricted to a single stock option while lacking space to move said equipment. The inability to fire in fully automatic can feel debilitating once a player learns their way around recoil, and many will find its damage to be lacking against more powerful enemy units. These factors often translate to players ditching the M16A2 when they have some cash to throw at a new gun.

The rifle does, however, have access to the A1 handguard and a detachable carry handle scope. These exclusive options make the M16A2 a prime choice for players building retro loadouts.

Tips & tactics[]

While it lacks fully-automatic capabilities, the M16A2's low recoil allows one to put rounds downrange in quick succession without significant loss in precision. This, combined with the weapon's high muzzle velocity and range, allow the M16A2 to perform admirably and consistently at extended distances. As a result, the M16A2 can hold its own in engagements that shorter-barreled weapons would typically struggle at.

While maneuvering is a vital skill to learn, the M16A2 is perfectly suited to returning fire immediately with confidence in its effectiveness. That being said, the M16A2's low weight lends itself to great mobility and handling. It also shares the same magazine options and reserve ammunition as other AR-platform rifles, allowing one to stay in the fight for longer periods of time.

Conclusion[]

Overall, the M16A2 is an excellent weapon for beginners, allowing them to train their accuracy and recoil control to pave the way for other weapons with higher damage and harsher recoil. Its kit allows the user to be liberal with their fire as they find, fix, flank, and finish the enemy.
